The Delaware State Police are investigating a school bus accident that sent eight people, including five students, to a local hospital.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:10 a.m. Nov. 18 on Millchop Lane, near Walnut Shade Road, said police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
The investigation showed the bus driver, identified as James T. Bennett, 72, of Camden-Wyoming, had stopped at the intersection and turned left onto Walnut Shade Road when he pulled into the path of a 2001 Chrysler, driven by Sharon K. Hunter, 60, of Harrington, Fournier said.
Hunter braked her car, but hit the left side of the bus near the rear axle. The bus continued on for approximately 50 feet, dragging the Chrysler in a counter-clockwise direction before coming to a stop.
First responders used the jaws of life to pull Hunter from her car; she and her two grandchildren, ages 7 and 2, were taken to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. All three were properly restrained, Fournier said.
Five children on the bus, ranging from 6 to 11 years of age, were taken to Kent General with non-life-threatening injuries. The rest of the children were transferred to a separate bus at the scene and continued on to Nellie Stokes Elementary School, south of Camden.
Caesar Rodney School District spokesman Ron Gough said the parents of the children involved in the accident were contacted immediately, and that the district has made the school nurse and school counselor available to talk to any students, whether they were involved or not, about the accident.
The nurse also checked on the status of the children who were not taken to the hospital.
"Once the uninjured students arrived at school, the school nurse did an immediate evaluation of each child to see if there were any injuries, and none were observed," Gough said.
Gough had no additional information on the condition of those students take to Kent General.
Fournier said Bennett, who was properly restrained and not injured in the crash, was cited for failing to remain stopped at a stop sign. He is a driver for the Hilton Bus Service, Camden.
Walnut Shade Road was closed between Barney Jenkins Road and Peachtree Run for approximately two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
