The Polytech Panthers field hockey squad defeated Sussex Tech 2-1 this afternoon to advance to the quarterfinals of the DIAA state field hockey tournament.
Sussex Tech came out fighting, at times out-playing the Panthers in the first half. However, Polytech would strike first when freshmen Camryn Dennis found the back of the net set up by junior Alyssa Jacobs to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers' 1-0 lead would last until Hannah Collins found Torrie Huk at 20:46 in the second half to tie things up at 1-1.
The rest of the half was highly contested with both teams trading scoring opportunities. After setting up the first goal of the game for Polytech, Jacobs would tally the game-winner with just 1:17 left in the half to clinch the win for the Panthers
Both goaltenders were on their game Wednesday, and they needed to be in a game that had 19 combined shots on goal.
Tech's Allison Moses made five saves to help keep the Ravens in it, while sophomore Lauren Lee continued her strong season between the pipes making eight saves for the Panthers.
Polytech now moves on to the quarterfinals on Saturday when they match up against Sanford. Game-time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at Smyrna High School.
