Mr. J. Ronald Nowland, age 82, died Monday, November 4, 2013 in Roanoke, Virginia following a massive stroke. Born and raised on a dairy farm in Smyrna, DE, Ron received his degree in Political Science from the University of Delaware following his service with the Army Intelligence Corp during the Korean Conflict. After working for the Farm Bureaus of DE and VA, he was recruited by the Virginia Automobile Dealers Association in Richmond as their President and Lobbyist, a career he held with distinction for nearly thirty years. Mr. Nowland is survived by his four children: J. Ronald (Kathy) Nowland, II of Midlothian, VA; Jeffry R. (Susan) Nowland of Chattanooga, TN; John R. Nowland and life partner Peter Fowler of Fort Worth, TX; Kathleen (Mike) Hollan of Aberdeen, SD; his ten grandchildren: Ron III, Kelli and Kory Nowland; Whitney (Jeff) Merrill ; Morgan Nowland; Lauren (Doug) Sievers, Michael (Chrystalyn) Hollan, II; Olivia, Rachel and Matthew Hollan; his four great-grandchildren: Mason Merrill, Ashlyn and Janelle Sievers, Allison Hollan; his beloved and devoted friend Martha Meredith Coleman and her two children Meredith Coleman; Ashby (Kim) Coleman of Roanoke, VA; his two sisters, Doris Everett and Allene Poore of Smyrna, DE; and his best friend Winston (golden retriever). A Memorial service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Clover Hill Ward, 4601 Bailey Bridge Rd, Midlothian, VA 23112 on Friday, November 8, 2013 at 11:00am. A private family interment will be at Westhampton Memorial Gardens in Richmond, next to his wife, Marybeth Carney, who preceded him in death in 1978.
