A 26-year-old Wilmington man fell to his death Tuesday morning while trying to jump between the spans of the William V. Roth Bridge, according to police.
DeKeevis Johnson landed the ground below the northern side of the bridge sometime before 1:40 a.m. and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. John Day said Johnson had been driving southbound on Del. Route 1 when his vehicle broke down on the bridge.
Johnson called for a tow truck, but was picked up by a friend before the tow truck arrived.
After crossing the bridge and turning around onto northbound Route 1, Johnson and his friend saw that a tow truck had arrived at the disabled vehicle.
The friend stopped his vehicle on the northbound span and Johnson attempted to leap over the gap to the southbound span, Day said.
After his fall, lanes of Route 1 were closed for three hours as police investigated his death.
An investigation is ongoing and no foul play is suspected, Day said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call state police at (302) 834-2630, ext. 208.
