A Wilmington-based staffing company will help the Amazon Fulfillment Center triple its staffing levels this fall as Middletown's largest employer prepares for the holiday shopping season.
Integrity Staffing Solutions of Wilmington announced this week that it is in the processes of hiring approximately 3,500 seasonal employees to work a six-week stint at the e-commerce giant's distribution center on Merrimac Avenue, as well as other companies in the area.
"These are good-paying jobs that a lot of people look at as a way earn some extra money for the holidays," said Integrity Staffing co-founder and chief operating officer Sean Montgomery. "We need to have these positions filled by the last week of November at the latest, so we're looking to bring people in as soon as possible."
The 3,500 seasonal workers being added for this year's holiday rush is nearly four times the number that were brought in to the Middletown facility for last year's holiday shopping season, which started just weeks after the 1.2-milllion-square-foot distribution center began operation.
On Cyber Monday last year, the Seattle-based company recorded its busiest day ever with more than 26.5 million items ordered worldwide, an average of 306 items per second.
At that time, the Middletown fulfillment center had a little more than 500 full-time workers. Amazon officials recently announced that its Middletown workforce has grown to more than 1,600 full-time employees, making its staff roughly equal to the population of Delaware City.
The addition of 3,500 temporary workers will bring the number of people working there to roughly the equivalent of New Castle's population – at least through the holiday season.
"The length of employment all depends on our client's business needs and whether orders continue to come in beyond the holidays," said Montgomery, whose company provides seasonal staffing for Amazon throughout the country. "We have seen some of our workers get hired on by Amazon in nearly every facility, but that's not something we can control and not a certainty we can offer."
Montgomery said the open seasonal positions being filled by Integrity Staffing include day and night shifts in picking, packing, shipping, receiving and management.
Shifts typically run 10 hours a day, four days a week and pay between $10.75 and $12 per hour with opportunities for overtime pay and immediate medical benefits for full-time workers.
Prospective employees can apply for positions online at DelawareIntegrityHires.com.
Applications also can be made in person by visiting Integrity Staffing's Opportunity Centers at 727 N. Broad St. in Middletown or 1418 N. DuPont Highway in New Castle. Both locations are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, while the Middletown location also is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
Integrity Staffing also will be seeking job applicants at the New Castle County Job Fair being organized by Delaware's Congressional delegation at the Embassy Suites in Newark from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday.

"Since we need to hire 3,500 workers, that means we're hoping to interview at least 6,000," Montgomery said. "But for those we do hire, the time from when they apply to when they start work can be as short as a week."
Integrity Staffing is also seeking to fill about 1,000 seasonal positions at Amazon's Fulfillment Center in New Castle, which was the company's first warehouse east of the Mississippi River when it opened in 1997.
