  • Edward Joseph Carey, 77, of Middletown, DE passed away in the comfort of his home with his loving wife by his side late Monday evening, September 30, 2013. Born on June 12, 1936 in Elizabeth, NJ, he was the son of the late Joseph Michael and Honora “Nonnie” (Ford) Carey. He proudly served his country with the US Army. Ed was a graduate of St. Patrick High School in Elizabeth, NJ and later earned his AA from Union Junior College; BA from Rutgers, Newark College of Arts and Sciences; Master of Arts from New York University and Master of Letters from Drew University. Having started teaching history in Jefferson High School in Elizabeth, Ed retired as House Director of Halsey House, Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1998. He was a lifetime honorary member and Past Grand Knight of Elizabeth Knights of Council 253 where he also served as president of the Columbian Club. He also enjoyed membership in the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree John Dawson Gilmary Shea Assembly of Union County, New Jersey and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Ed was a member of many professional organizations, including the Elizabeth Education Association; New Jersey Education Association; National Education Association and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Michael Carey. Ed leaves many fond memories to his loving wife of 47 years, Noel (Kothe) Carey; daughter, Elise Corcoran and her husband, Thomas; son, Michael Carey; sister, Mary Elizabeth Carey and two grandchildren, James Patrick and Andrew Joseph Corcoran. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11 am on Saturday, October 5 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 371 E. Main Street in Middletown. Friends may visit Friday evening, October 4, from 7-9 pm at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown. Interment will follow at Old Bohemia Cemetery/St. Francis Xavier in Warwick, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Parish, 371 E. Main Street, Middletown, DE 19709.
