Jimmie Johnson took home the checkered flag for a record eighth time at the Monster Mile Sunday, winning the Sprint Cup Series AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway.

For Johnson, his fifth victory of the season helped push him ahead of Kyle Busch, who finished fifth, to second in the Sprint Cup Series Chase trailing only Matt Kenseth, who finished in seventh on Sunday.

Johnson led most of the race, leading during the 26-lap green flag that finished out the race. The 48 car was able to hold off pole-sitter and Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt to bring home the victory.

Joey Logano, Saturday’s winner; finished in third behind Johnson and Earnhardt, while Jeff Gordon and Busch finished in third and fourth respectively.

The fourth caution of the day was called late in the race, causing many to reevaluate their strategy to end the race. While Johnson and his team came out of the pits changing only two tires, Earnhardt changed all four and came out of pit row trailing Johnson, Kenseth, and Gordon but quickly bolted to second place but was unable to catch Johnson.

Johnson led for 243 laps, but his decision at his last stop to pit row may have been the difference on Sunday.

Coming into Sunday’s race, Johnson was tied with legends Richard Petty and Bobby Allison for most victories at Dover.

Now, the Chase series heads to Kansas Speedway next week for the Hollywood Casino 400.
