An 83-year-old Wilmington woman has died after the car she was driving collided with a flatbed truck near the Dover toll plaza Wednesday afternoon.
Kent County Emergency Operations Center received a 911 call stating that a maroon car was driving erratically on Del. Route 1 southbound, when shortly after, Shirley J. Taylor, who was driving a 2007 maroon Honda Civic, failed to slow and come to a stop behind the flatbed truck, which was waiting in line at the toll booth, said Delaware State Police Spokesman Gary E. Fournier. The Honda collided with the truck's rear crash bar and became wedged under the truck.
Taylor was removed from the car by the Dover Fire Department with the help of machinery, Fournier said. She was transported to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, where she died as a result of her injuries and 3:08 p.m.
The operator of the truck, Paul A. Leone, 57 of Moyock, N.C., was wearing his seat belt and was removed from the scene by emergency personnel, Fournier said. He was transported to Kent General Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation into this incident, Fournier said. The toll plaza was closed for two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared. The Express Lanes of De. Route 1 southbound remained open and tolls were suspended during that time.
