Delaware State Police troopers have arrested a Marydel man, identified as Charles L. Melvin Jr., 34, after he allegedly drove his car into a couple's truck and then tried to flee on foot.
The crash took place at 12:45 p.m. Sept. 23, on Willow Grove Road, east of Pony Track Road, said police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
Melvin, of the 2600 block of Westville Road, was driving his 2001 Impala eastbound on Willow Grove Road when he drove into the westbound lane, Fournier said. A Felton man, who was driving a 2000 Ford Ranger and was pulling a trailer loaded with lawn maintenance equipment, swerved to the left to avoid an impact but instead was struck on the passenger side.-
Melvin then left his vehicle and fled on foot, Fournier said. Witness reports allowed troopers to find him in the area of Sandtown Road, where, after being spotted, he continued to run away. Troopers eventually caught him and took in into custody without further incident.
A search of Melvin's person turned up approximately 0.8 grams of marijuana and a smoking device in his pockets, Fournier said. Police also determined Melvin was under the influence of alcohol.
Melvin was charged with first-degree vehicular assault, third-degree vehicular assault, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and other traffic related offenses.
He was jailed at the Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, in default of a $6005 secured bond.
The driver of the truck, a 54-year-old Felton man, was treated and released from Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital; the 54-year-old woman passenger was airlifted to the Christiana Medical Center with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
