Officers with the Capitol Police prevented the escape of a 22-year-old New Castle man following a court appearance at the Kent County Courthouse.
Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security spokeswoman Kimberly Chandler said the attempt occurred Sept. 11 as officers were escorting the prisoner, identified as Frank L. Blunt from the courthouse cellblock to a transport van.
As the prisoners were being loaded into the van, Blunt allegedly grabbed at a Department of Correction officer's weapon and tried to wrest it free. A short struggle took place, with additional officers subduing Blunt and then moving him back to the cellblock.
The officer was able to retain control of his weapon, Chandler said.
Blunt was charged with attempted escape after conviction, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited.
He was recommitted to the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center, Smyrna, in default of an unspecified bond.
