Season Outlook: After a 1-9 finish to the 2012 season, the Polytech Panthers have gone in a different direction, hiring new head coach Kevin Smith. Smith has spent his entire football coaching career down in Virginia going 29-19 and making the playoffs 3 of 4 seasons at his previous school. Smith and the Panthers will have a tough test ahead of them this season after moving to the tougher Henlopen North Division but Smith believes he has Polytech on the right track to compete. The Panthers have installed a brand-new spread offense as well as a new defense system, so Polytech will be operation on a learning curve. However, after years of lackluster play a fresh start was necessary. And so far, the Polytech practices have been high-tempo and energetic. While the wins may not come right away, the Panthers focus is improving each and every game. Also, a solid performance against rival Caesar Rodney in this year’s Homecoming game wouldn’t be so bad either.
Coach’s Quote: “I won’t tell the boys that I expect to go 5-5 or 6-4 this season,” said Polytech Head Coach Kevin Smith. “We’re focused on getting better, playing with selflessness, and if we can do that I believe the rest will fall into place.”
