The Lake Forest Spartans haven't seen the DIAA state tournament in two years, finishing 5-5 in consecutive seasons since going 8-2 back 2010. This season, a youthful Spartan squad looks to take the next step toward returning to the playoffs.

Season Outlook: The 2012 Lake Forest Spartans football squad showed some flashes of being a very highly competitive team last season, going 5-5 with some impressive performances against some of the state's best. The Spartans lost four close contests to Sussex Central, Delaware Military Academy, Delmar and Indian River, falling by a score or less in each game. This season, the Spartans return with a much younger group that has worked together all summer long in hopes of fielding a highly competitive team this fall. Head coach Fred Johnson is known for patrolling the sidelines with a fiery attitude, and he instills that feeling into the rest of the squad, making Lake Forest a tough team to play week-in-and-week-out. If everything comes together and the Spartans can gel quickly, there's no doubt they can compete for a spot in the state tournament this season.

Coach's Quote: "We expect to be very competitive every week," said Lake Forest Head Coach Fred Johnson. "If we can stay healthy and keep improving we could be right in the mix for a possible tournament berth at the end of the season."
