A Dover man, identified as Jamar West, 26, of the first block of Presidents Drive, has been arrested following a reported early morning shooting.
The incident took place at 2:40 a.m. Aug. 23, as officers went to the area of South Queen and Reed streets following a report of shots being fired, said Dover Police Department spokesman Lt. Joseph Richardson.
As officers arrived on the scene, one suspect fled on foot; another was contacted in the area of Reed and Kirkwood streets. Detectives at the scene discovered the vehicle being used by the two men had been struck by a bullet, Richardson said.
Surveillance cameras showed West, who officers determined was the man who had fled on foot, had pointed an assault rifle at a passing Dover Police officer. West apparently had the rifle in his possession when he fled the area of Queen and Reed streets, Richardson said.
West had been operating the vehicle that had been shot at, Richardson added, and had gotten out of the vehicle with the rifle when police arrived.
No information was given as to what precipitated the shooting incident.
The police department’s Special Operations Response Team executed a search warrant at West’s residence, where he was taken into custody. A loaded .22-caliber assault rifle was recovered as well.
West has been charged with aggravated menacing, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony.
He was ordered held at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center, Smyrna, in lieu of an unspecified bond.
