A Sunday morning fire has totally destroyed a historic rural church west of Felton.
The fire at the Cedar Grove Wesleyan Church was reported at 5 a.m. Aug. 11, said Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio. The church is about 10 miles west of Felton and approximately two miles from Whiteleysburg, on the Maryland/Delaware line.
Crews from the Felton Volunteer Fire Company were the first to arrive on the scene and discovered the entire building engulfed in flames. Several other fire companies assisted in putting out the blaze.
The congregation traces the origins of the church building to 1858, said the Rev. Daniel Taylor, pastor of the church.
Chionchio said state fire investigators are looking into the fire’s origin and cause. Damage is estimated to exceed $250,000.
There were no reported injuries.
