A Dover man, identified as Elzie R. Gibbs, is one of two persons arrested by state troopers after a month-long investigation into drug activity.
Gibbs, 50, and a second man, Anthony Jones, 38, of Smyrna, were taken into custody at 2 p.m. July 25, when members of the Kent County Drug Unit served a search warrant at the Economy Inn Motel at 4133 S. DuPont Highway, said Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
Fournier said that as police entered the motel room, Jones ignored commands to drop to the ground and instead fled into a bathroom where he began to flush cocaine down the toilet. Members of the Special Operations Response Team took him into custody without further incident. Gibbs also was arrested without incident, Fournier said.
A search of the room turned up 15.5 grams of cocaine along with drug paraphernalia used to distribute cocaine, he said.
Both men were charged with possession of cocaine, possession with intent to deliver cocaine, first-degree conspiracy, tampering with physical evidence, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Jones also was charged with resisting arrest.
Both were jailed at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center, Smyrna; Jones was held on a $31,000 cash bond, while Gibbs was held on a $29,000 cash bond.
The arrests were made with the assistance of the Kent County Governor’s Task Force, State Police Special Operations Response Team and Dover Police Department Drug Unit.
