The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred early this morning east of Camden.
Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said the incident occurred around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday on East Lebanon Road, east of Sorghum Mill Road.
A motorcycle, driven by William E. Caldwell, 25, of Cheswold, was traveling at a high rate of speed, failed to negotiate a right-hand curve and entered the crossover in front of the Liberto Plaza, where it struck a yield sign. The motorcycle continued another 90 feet westbound before throwing Caldwell and his passenger, identified as Veronica Crain, 21, of Harrington. The riderless motorcycle then traveled another 230 feet before coming to a stop in the eastbound lanes of Route 10.
Crain, who was wearing a helmet, was taken from the scene by EMS to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, where she died a short time later.
Caldwell, who was not wearing a helmet, was initially taken to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital before being transferred to Christiana Medical Center where he is listed in serious condition.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident, Fournier said. Alcohol and speed appear to be a factor in this case, he said.
