DELAWARE ALL-STATE THEATRE - Jekyl & Hyde, The Musical

In 2007 community theatre veteran Jeff Santora had an epiphany. There were All State soccer players, football players, even All State Chorus members. Well, what about thespians?

The premiere of DAST the following year was a thrilling LES MIS followed by WEST SIDE STORY, URINETOWN, RAGTIME and HAIRSPRAY.

This year the adventuresome troupe tackles JEKYL & HYDE, the schizophrenic musical! (Aisle Say's tagline.)  Students up to age 19 audition statewide and each show has enjoyed large casts of dedicated performers.  Their motto is to move the 'theatrical needle' from great to exceptional performances. Director Santoro and his assistant Deb Johnson extract every particle of talent from their charges.

There is absolutely gorgeous music. "This Is The Moment" is on Aisle Say's Top Ten of Broadway showstoppers. It begins in Dr. Jekyl's study and ends in his laboratory where he transforms into consummate evil.  "Someone Like You", "Once Upon A Dream" and "A New Life" can be tour de forces with the right voice and actor.

There is a change in venue this year, the magnificent Laird Center for the Arts at Tatnall School.

There is a contagion of Shakespearean love in Delaware's Year of The Bard. First the Arden Shakespeare Gild stages MUCH ADO and now, our state's only professional Shakespearean group, produces TWO GENTS OF VERONA.

The comedy may be Will's first play, seen as showing his first tentative steps in laying out some of the themes and tropes with which he would later deal in more detail; for example, it is the first of his plays in which a heroine dresses as a boy. The play deals with the themes of man/woman conflict and infidelity, similar to what we saw in MUCH ADO.

Rehearsals have just begun for the July open air show at Rockwood Mansion. While most directors guard the secrecy of same like coach Andy Reid, the public is invited to see the players go through their motions.  Compelling idea! See the site for info.

Last year's MIDSUMMER's was staged much closer to the audience. Aisle Say thought this was a grand idea for audience engagement.

Guest are welcome to bring their own picnic dinners. Beverages and snack items are sold in DSF’s Concessions Tent.
