The Caesar Rodney Riders Boy Lacrosse squad defeated #2 Cape Henlopen 11-8 on Wednesday night to advance to the DIAA State Championship game this Saturday.
The Riders were able to take an early lead on the Vikings and hold back a Cape come-back attempt in the 4th period to return to the State Championship game.
CR jumped on the Vikings early; taking a 5-1 lead into the break. In the second half they were able to keep a very tough Cape Henlopen team at arm’s length to hold on for the 11-8 victory.
MacLeish led the way for the Riders with a game-high 4 goals on the night. Austin Hayward scored 2, while Sheahan, Schaeffer and Rankin each tallied a goal apiece for the Riders.
Now, the Riders will get a chance at some revenge. For the second season in a row, they will match up with Salesianum in the State Title game. Last season, the Riders finished just short of their goal falling to Sallies 13-2.
This time around the Riders are just as focused and motivated as ever to bring home the state crown.
“This team is focused on the task at hand, which is defeating Salesianum for the state title,” said Head Coach Drew Hughes. “In a game this big there are plenty of sources of motivation, we’re excited about the opportunity of playing for a ring.”
After falling to Sallies last season, Hughes believes his Riders squad will be more prepared for Salesianum and the glare of the championship stage.
“I think the experience of playing in the state championship game last year can only help this team,” said Hughes. “The playoffs are an entirely different atmosphere than the regular season. For a lot of our guys this will be their eighth playoff game in two years, so just like anything in life, experience is an invaluable asset.”
The Riders will take on Salesianum for the Boys Lacrosse State Championship on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Appoquinimink High School.
