  • Joseph Watson Baker, Jr. of Felton died Monday May 20, 2013 at Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. He was 82.

    Mr. Baker was born November 2, 1930 in Vernon, Delaware to the late Joseph Watson Baker, Sr. and Edna Wooters Baker.

    Upon graduation from Harrington High School he worked for Wilson Refrigeration in Smyrna. On February 5, 1951 he began work for Delaware Highway Department as a survey party chairman.

  • Joseph Watson Baker, Jr. of Felton died Monday May 20, 2013 at Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. He was 82.
    Mr. Baker was born November 2, 1930 in Vernon, Delaware to the late Joseph Watson Baker, Sr. and Edna Wooters Baker.
    Upon graduation from Harrington High School he worked for Wilson Refrigeration in Smyrna. On February 5, 1951 he began work for Delaware Highway Department as a survey party chairman. After working for the department for 20 years and taking advantage of many training seminars and correspondence schools Mr. Baker was able to qualify and be registered as a Professional Engineer. Following this he served as District Engineer, Material and Research Engineer, State Maintenance Engineer and Assistant Director of Field Services. He retired from that position in 1989 after more than 38 years service, most of which he thoroughly enjoyed.
    He was a member of the Masonic Union Lodge #7AF & AM, a lifetime member Elk Lodge 1903 in Dover, Harrington Moose Lodge #534, the Harrington Senior Center and the Felton Volunteer Fire Auxiliary. Mr. Baker was a founding member of the Del One Credit Union as well as a member of the Highway Department 10 year Club; while he was president of the club he was able to get accidental death policy for members. Mr. Baker enjoyed life. He liked golf, bowling, fishing, snowmobiling, traveling, and collecting many items such as American Fostoria, bells, hens on nests and much more. He also enjoyed being with his family and friends, also his faithful dog, Bogey.
    Mr. Baker is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 41 years, Betty Lee Baker of Felton; son, William H. Baker and his wife LuAnn of Milford; daughter, Judith “Judy” Smith of Felton; grandchildren, Kimberly Edwards and her husband Moir and Riley D. Baker (he was her bad guy and she was his sunshine); sisters, Madelyn Foxwell and Anna Mae Draper and her husband Allen all of Harrington; sister in law, Ellen Cowgill and her husband Charles of Smyrna; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held 1PM Friday, May 24, 2013 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.100, Dover.) Viewing will be from 12-1 p.m. Friday. Friends may call Thursday evening from 7-9. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.  
    In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Felton Volunteer Fire Co, Felton, DE 19943, Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963 or Harrington Sentior Center, 102 Fleming Street, Harrington, DE 19952.
