After posting a 13-1 record this season and earning their first DIAA State Tournament berth, they were knocked out of the states by the #5 Ursuline 9-8 on Saturday afternoon.
From the opening minute, the squads traded goals and the play seemed to fly back-and-forth from one side of the field to the other. The Panthers started the game hot, netting several goals to get an early jump on Ursuline, only to see Ursuline respond to take a 5-3 lead into the half.
In the second half, it was more of the same from both teams. However, with Ursuline leading 8-7 and just under 8:00 remaining in the contest, Jamie Trabaudo of Polytech tied the game at 8 as the game winded down to a close.
With just minutes remaining in the contest, 8th grader Brooke Schmeusser scored the game-winning goal for Ursuline to knock the Panthers out of the state tournament.
Trabaudo led the way with 3 goals on the day, Adelaide Stang and Jenna Hayes netted 2 goals apiece and Jorden Dennis tallied the fourth goal for the Panthers in the loss.
Even in the loss, the Panthers stood tall against a talented Ursuline team. The growth of the young program was easy to see, and even though they will lose some seniors to graduation the program seems to be on the right path.
