  • Benjamin F. Sawyer, Sr., of Dover, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, May 7, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was 71.
    Ben was born, February 5,1942, in Evinston, Florida; to the Late- James & Doris(Wright) Sawyer. He proudly served in the United States Navy , for over 20 years, retiring in 1979; then worked as a rigger in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia for 14 years. Upon relocating to Delaware, he was employed by the City of Dover for over 8 years; and then worked in the commissary on the Dover Air Force Base for 10 years, before finally retiring. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Dover.
    Mr. Sawyer is survived by his wife of 51 years. Lillian(Brown) Sawyer; 2 Daughters, Melissa Sawyer, of Dover; and Benita S. McCrary & her husband- Andre, of Orangeburg, FL. a son, Benjamin F. Sawyer, Jr, & his wife-Phyllis, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; 2 Sisters- Elizabeth & Carol Williams, both of St.Petersburg,FL.; 2 Brothers- Samuel Sawyer, of St. Petersburg,FL. & David Sawyer, of Evinston,FL. 7 Grandchildren- Deon P.Sawyer,serving in the United States Coast Guard; Nicole Nolen, of Orangeburg,FL; Bantie' J. Sawyer, of Upper Marlboro,MD; Benjamin F Sawyer, III, of Portsmouth,VA.; Markedrius Lair, of Alexandria,Louisianna; Noel A. Taylor, of Orangeburg,FL; & Garzell A. Hall, of Dover. 2 great-grandchildren- Markedrius Lair,Jr. & Sean Nolen.
    A celebration of his life will be held early next week, at the Calvary Baptist Church, Route 8 West (Forrest Ave.) Dover. Please contact the family for details.
