The Polytech Panthers baseball squad was able to hold off the Caesar Rodney Riders in a Henlopen Conference match up on Friday, 5-4.
Polytech’s Conner Chasanov pitched a complete-game, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits while striking out 6 Rider batters in the victory. While C.J. Baker lead the offense for Polytech finishing 3-for-4 with a homerun and double and 2 RBI in the victory.
Baker opened the scoring with a lead-off homerun in the Panthers 2-run 1st inning; he would later score on a tremendous hustle play scoring off a sacrifice fly from 2nd base. The Panthers would tack on another run in the 2nd to take a 3-0 lead heading into the 3rd inning.
In the 3rd, the Riders would respond with 2 runs of their own to cut the Polytech lead to 3-2.
The two teams would remain scoreless until the bottom half of the 5th inning when Baker would once again do some damage with his bat.
Baker hit an RBI double in the 5th later scoring on a Trey Obermire single to give Polytech a commanding 5-2 lead heading into the 6th.
The Riders would try to chip away at the Polytech lead in the final two innings, scoring a run in the 6th to crawl within 2 runs of the Panthers. In the top half of the 7th inning CR starting pitcher Aaron Briggs would help his own cause doubling a Chasanov pitch off the wall to bring the tying run to the plate. Briggs would score on a sacrifice fly before Chasanov sat down CR’s Quintin Ivy on strikes to end the ball-game.
The win for Polytech improves their record to 5-2 overall and 4-1 within the Henlopen Conference. Caesar Rodney falls to 5-4 overall with a record of 2-2 within the conference.
The Riders return to the diamond on Thursday when they travel to Cape Henlopen, first pitch scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
The Panthers will be in action on Thursday as well when they host Smyrna at 4:15 p.m.
