  • DSU Softball falls to Norfolk State 6-0 in series finale

  • Liz Riley tossed an eight-hit shutout and Alina Moriarty had a homer and two RBI to lead Norfolk State to a 6-0 win over Delaware State in a MEAC North contest at the NSU Softball Field on Sunday. The Spartans swept the three-game series to improve to 23-18 overall and 14-1 in the MEAC. The Hornets fell to 15-28 and 7-5.
    Nicole Gazzolla had two of DSU’s eight hits. Gazzolla has hit in seven of the last eight games to improve her season average to .417.
    The Hornets left 10 runners on base in the contest, including two in the second, third and sixth innings.
    Norfolk State opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning on Moriarty’s eighth home run of the season, a solo shot to left center.
    The Spartans added four runs in the second inning to open up a 5-0 lead. Moriarty singled in her second run of the game in the inning.
    Norfolk State tacked on a run in the fourth to close out the scoring.
    Rachel Meagley (3-12) was the losing pitcher for DSU.
    The Hornets return to action with a doubleheader at Maryland on Wednesday (Apr. 24). Game one starts at 5:00 p.m.
    DSU returns home next weekend against MEAC North rival Howard. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m.; and wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday (2:00 p.m.).
