  • Mildred “Milly” McGinnis Alderson, passed away Monday April 22, 2013. She was 87.
    Born in Baltimore, MD on October 26, 1925 to the late Charles and Mildred McGinnis.
    In 1933 the family moved to Middletown, where she attended school and graduated from Middletown High School Class of '43.  In 1975 she completed her Associate degree from Delaware Technical and Community College.  In her early years Milly worked for 10 years for the B&O Railroad at the Wilmington freight station.  On June 15, 1946 she married Charles Edgar “Turk” Alderson in Middletown.  The family moved to Dover in 1963, and Milly did clerical work in the Office of the Governor for 6 years before transferring to the Department of Public Instruction, retiring in 1984 as an administrative secretary.
    Milly was an active member of St. Paul's Methodist Church and Post Cana (an organization for widowed people), where she has served on the Board for several years.  She was also a member of Sellers Senior Center, and both the Claymont and Aldersgate AARP chapters.  She enjoyed traveling, dancing, reading, and spending time with her extended family and many friends.
    Predeceased by her husband of 50 years, “Turk”, who died in 1997, and her husband of 5 months Philip Smith Penrose, who died in 1999.
    Milly is survived by her sons Gary and wife Felisha of Wilmington, with whom she lived, and their children Paige and Max; Charles E. Jr. and wife Yanping of Newark, and his son David of Boston, MA: Gene and wife Pat of Middletown, and his daughter Jennifer Alderson Wallace with husband David and daughter Julia, all of Newark, their children Stephen and his wife Rachele of Perryville, MD, and Peggy of Newark.
    She will be greatly missed by her beloved brother C. Ronald McGinnis and wife Ann of Wilmington, DE and Naples, FL, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, especially her most true friend, David Low.
    In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to St. Paul’s Methodist Church, 1314 Foulk Road, Wilmington or Post Cana.
    A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1314 Foulk Road, Wilmington on Friday April 26th.  Visitation will be at 10AM, and the service will be at 11AM.  Shiva service will be held Sunday, April 28th at 7:30 pm at the home of Gary and Felisha Alderson, Wilmington.  Burial will be private.
