  • MedExpress is not a newcomer to the state of Delaware. They have clinics in Newark, New Castle and Wilmington. The company, which was founded in Morgantown, W.V. in 2001, will be open to see patients at their newest location in Dover as of April 24.
    According to Dan Gray, a regional representative for MedExpress, the ball on the Dover location began rolling in late fall.
    “We started the process five or six months ago. We want to make sure we are in the right community. We don’t jump in without a thorough evaluation,” he said.
    Their transition into Dover hasn’t taken place over night. Their new center is located at 15 S. Dupont Hwy., in the Edgehill Shopping Center. They gutted the storefront and are in the final stages of rehabbing it.
    “We want the space to have a bright, open, airy feel,” Gray said. “We want people to be in an environment that is welcoming.”
    Their renovations are slated to be complete for their open house on the April 23, when the community will be invited to come to the facility and take tours. The event will also feature a ribbon cutting and some promotional giveaways.
    For some, the idea of heading over to local shopping center when you need stitches may seem like a strange idea, but it’s all part MedExpress’s plan to offer people convenient emergency care. Part of that convenience comes from not having to make an appointment. All of MedExpress’s patients are walk ins. 
    “Our motto is injury doesn’t happen on a schedule. We can get patients in and out in an hour,” Gray said.
    Gray made it clear though that MedExpress is not equipped to handle all patients.
     “If an injury is in any way life-altering the patient should got to the emergency room, but we can treat strains, sprains, minor lacerations. We do x-rays, wound treatment and splinting. We can also fill some prescriptions,” he said.
    According to Gray, MedExpress’ services are typically a third of the cost of an emergency room trip. The facility accepts most forms of insurance and also works with those who don’t have insurance.
    “We offer several different plans for those who don’t have insurance. We don’t want to cause hardship for anyone,” he said.
    According to Gray, MedExpress augments existing health services in a community. They take the pressure off over-crowded emergency rooms, he said.
    “Ninety percent of emergency rooms are over capacity and 85 percent of patients don’t need to be there,” he said. “When we come into a community it’s not to take patients away from emergency rooms or physicians. Our goal is not to provide primary care.”
