  • Mark Carden Whitley, 61, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 28th at the Hospice Home of Wake County.  A graduate of Guilford College, Mark was an accountant and long-time Raleigh area entrepreneur.  He was an active member of Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon, Elder and Stephen Ministry Leader.
Mark attended Dover Jr. High and Dover HS from 1964-1968 and graduated from Caesar Rodney HS in 1969.He received a football Scholarship to the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in 1969. He later transfered to Guilford College where he received both a football and baseball scholarship.
Mark’s life focus was his family.  A devoted loving husband and father, Mark was always involved in his son’s activities; events at their schools, Indian Guides and sports.  As an athlete himself, he enjoyed coaching the sports they played.  His other passion was being part of Saint Andrews Stephen Ministry program.  Mark had a special gift of inspiring others with his compassion and loving nature.  As the nurses of the Hospice Home said, “we are supposed to be caring for him, but he is caring for us.”
Mark is survived by his wife Mary, his sons Daniel and Brian all in Raleigh, a brother David Whitley of Longs, SC, and a sister Kimberly Mandich of Hattiesburg, MS.  His parents, CMSGT David Lynn Whitley and Carolyn Carden Whitley preceded him to heaven.  Mark has several loving nieces and nephews.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Mark to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
We will cherish the loving memories of you forever.
