  • Janet Altvater Dale passed away suddenly on March 28, 2013 at Brandywine Assisted Living at Longwood.  She was 88 years old.
    Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Janet was the daughter of the late Richard Powers Altvater and the late Maude Phillips Altvater.  Janet was raised in Wilmington, Delaware and graduated from Pierre S. duPont High School in 1941.  She furthered her education and completed the one year business program at Beacom Business School in 1942.
    Janet and her husband, the late Hugh R. Dale, became members of the First Presbyterian Church of Dover when they moved to the town in 1960.  A devout christian, she served as Deacon of the church and sang in the choir.  She was known as a helping and caring person to those in need of assistance.  When her husband took ill with advanced Alzheimer's disease, she took great care of him.  She will be deeply missed.
    Janet was a member of the Dover Century Club and an honorary member of the United States Power Squadron.  She enjoyed sailing with her husband and swimming, for which she earned many honors at the Senior Olympics.
    Janet was the beloved mother of Richard Dale and his wife Janet of Cochranville, Pennsylvania and John Dale and his wife Zoe of Conroe, Texas; grandmother of Nicole Hoffman and her husband Lance and Eric Dale and his wife Allison; great-grandmother of six; sister of the late Richard Altvater.
    A memorial service will be offered at 1:00PM on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church of Dover, 54 South State Street in Dover, Delaware.  Pastor Mary Reed will officiate the service.
    Burial will be private by the family.
    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Janet's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC  20090-6011.
