  • Dover man arrested in connection with January Smyrna home invasion
Delaware State Police have arrested a Dover man in connection with a home invasion and robbery that took place Jan. 15 in Smyrna.
Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said Troop 3 detectives, along with Dover Police Drug Unit and Special Operations Response team served a search warrant March 28 at a home in the 600 block of Nimitz Road and arrested Martin F. Smith, 41, without incident.
A search of the residence turned up a Tec-DC9 handgun, a 9 mm handgun, a .22-caliber handgun and various rounds of ammunition.
The original incident took place Friday, Jan. 25 at a home in the first block of Hedgerow Hollow Road, Smyrna. The 38-year-old victim told police he had answered a knock at the door and was greeted by a man who explained his car had slid into the victim's car in front of the house. As the victim left the house, he was confronted by a second man. Both the man and Smith allegedly pulled handguns and demanded money. The man turned over an undisclosed amount of cash and a written prescription for medication.
The two men then took the victim back into the house and demanded more money, causing a physical confrontation between the suspects and the victim. The suspects hit the victim over the head with the handguns and fled in an unknown direction.
The victim was taken to a local hospital and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Fournier said the investigators determined this was not a random act and that the victim had been targeted for the attack.
Smith was charged with first-degree robbery; first-degree assault; home invasion; possession of a deadly weapon during commission of a felony; five counts of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited; three counts of aggravated menacing; endangering the welfare of a child; and second-degree conspiracy.
Smith was ordered held at the Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna in default of $185,000 secured bond.
If anyone has any information in reference to the second suspect, they are asked to contact Detective Dan Wright of the Troop 3 at Criminal Investigations Unit at 302-741-2811 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333. Information also may be provided via the Internet at www.tipsubmit.com.
