A Dover man didn't get far after allegedly robbing a local convenience store.

Dover Police have arrested a local man on suspicion he robbed a New Street convenience store.

Malek A. Watkins, 31, was taken into custody immediately after the robbery, which took place at the 7-Eleven store at 449 S. New St., said police spokesman Lt. Daniel McKeown.

An investigation showed Watkins had allegedly planned the robbery, along with another man, while outside the store, McKeown said. Watkins allegedly entered the store wearing a hoodie over his head and a bandanna across his face, indicated he had a firearm, and demanded cash.

Watkins fled the store but was caught in the vicinity of the Tire King store at the corner of South Governors Avenue and West Water Street.

Watkins was charged with first-degree robbery, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony and second-degree conspiracy. He was jailed at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna in default of a $56,000 secured bond.

The second suspect has not been caught, McKeown said.
