School: Dover High School
2012-2013 Record: 13-6
Head Coach: Dave Gordon
Key Returning Players: Brett Jones, Kyle Mace, Seth Penniston, Colin Stein
Season Outlook: The Dover Senators return to the diamond after a 13-win season and a berth in the DIAA State Tournament last season. They will look to improve upon last season, after they were knocked out of the tournament in the first round by St. Elizabeth.
The Senators boast a large returning cast to the fold this season, all one year wiser with one focus in mind, winning.
A large portion of the returning players will offer tremendous depth on the mound for the Senators. Including RHP Tyler Cullen, a transfer from Caravel, who Head Coach Dave Gordon believes will be a huge piece for Dover on the mound this season.
From the Coach: “The goal is to win the state title,” said Head Coach Dave Gordon. “That’s definitely our goal but there are others, winning a division title which hasn’t been done here since the late 70s. We’ve been trying for years to get deeper into the state tournament and I think we’ve got a realistic shot, we’re pretty tough at home here and we want to be a part of the 16 teams and see what we can do from there.”
School: Caesar Rodney High School
2012-2013 Record: 14-4
Head Coach: Richard Szvitich
Key Returning Players: Aaron Briggs, Lee Killen, Seth Brosius, Brennen Brown, Travis Dill
Season Outlook: While the Riders 14-4 record was good enough to get them into the DIAA State Tournament last season, they were knocked out unceremoniously in the first round after reaching the State Semifinals the previous season.
In 2013, they look to improve upon last year’s finish with a large group of returning players ready to take on the challenge.
From the Coach: “I feel pretty good about our team this season,” said Caesar Rodney Head Coach Richard Szvitich. “We have a great group of returners and a solid group of underclassmen. I think we have some of the best team unity that I have seen in a few years. There are a lot of leaders and everyone seems to have bought into the team. I’m really excited about this group and their potential.”
School: Polytech High School
2012-2013 Record: 10-8
Head Coach: George Eilers
Key Returning Players: CJ Baker, Conner Chasanov
Season Outlook: In 2012, the Polytech Panthers baseball squad improved their record to 10-8 after finishing 8-10 the previous season. While it wasn’t good enough to earn them a berth into the DIAA State Tournament, the Panthers showed they could compete in the tough Henlopen Conference.
This season, behind 2nd Team All-State Catcher CJ Baker and 1st Team All-Henlopen South Outfielder Conner Chasanov, the Panthers look to fight their way back to the state tournament for the first time since 2010.
The Panthers will look to build upon their furious finish to last season, after winning 5 of their last 6 games to end the year nearly sneaking into the playoffs.
From the Coach: “Our expectations this season are to compete,” said Polytech Head Coach George Eilers. “We’re returning seven starters, but pitching will be our biggest challenge going into 2013.”
School: Lake Forest High School
2012-2013 Record: 6-12
Head Coach: Corey Wyatt
Key Returning Players: Cory McGinness, Corey Pardee, Michael Sabino, Cody Dodd, Brett McGray
Season Outlook: The Lake Forest Spartans baseball squad has seen their win totals slowly decline over the past few seasons in the very competitive Henlopen South Division. This season, with a large number of returning players, the Spartans look to turn their fortunes around this season.
After a 6-12 record last season that saw them on the outside looking in at the playoff picture, the Spartans return with Cory McGinness and Corey Pardee as a strong foundation at the top of their pitching rotation. While Michael Sabino, Cody Dodd and Brett McGray will solidify the middle of their lineup, and underclassmen Tyler Collins, Logan Simpson and Dillon Cole all look to contribute for the Spartans.
From the Coach: “The expectation is always to compete for the Southern Division Championship,” said Lake Forest Head Coach Corey Wyatt. “It will be tough because the South is so strong, but I believe we are capable of it. Last year our achilles heel was our defense; if we can sure that up I believe we will be very competitive.”
School: St. Thomas More High School
2012-2013 Record: 9-8
Head Coach: Anthony Pool
Key Returning Players: Kenneth Anderson, Charles Biddle, Rourke Bonnell, Savan Patel, Michael Simpkiss, Brian Spangler, Sean Pool
Season Outlook: After winning only 3 games just three seasons ago, the Ravens have finished at 9-8 in back-to-back seasons. Unfortunately, their 9-8 mark wasn’t good enough to reach the State Tournament.
The Ravens are hoping that familiarity will help get them over their 9-win hump this season. With a number of returning starters, St. Thomas More is counting on their cohesiveness to continue to build going into the 2013 campaign.
