Delaware State Police have arrested two Hartly-area men in connection with a home invasion and sexual assault that took place March 6.
The suspects were identified as Robert D. Brown, 24, and John E. Edwards, 24, both of Hartly, said police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary E. Fournier. Edwards was taken into custody without incident March 8 at his home; Brown was picked up March 13 while walking along Halltown Road near Hartly, Fournier said.
The incident took place at approximately 3:45 a.m. March 6, when two men drove up to a home and motor home located on Brittney Lane, Fournier said. One of the men went into the main house, threatened a 29-year-old man inside with a handgun, then took his wallet and ordered him outside. Once outside, the man assaulted the victim, knocking him to the ground.
The man then ran to the motor home, where a fight took place between the two suspects and a 54-year-old man. The suspects then fled the scene.
The first victim was treated at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries; the second victim was first treated at Bayhealth, but later flown to the Christiana Medical Center, where he is listed in serious condition.
The 54-year-old victim had been sexually assaulted with an unknown object during the fight in the motor home, Fournier said.
Brown and Edwards were arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2; both were charged with first-degree rape, two counts of first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, two counts of home invasion, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, second-degree assault, aggravated menacing, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony, and second-degree conspiracy.
Edwards was committed to the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna, in default of a $191,000 secured bond. Brown was jailed at the Sussex Correctional Institute in Georgetown, in lieu of a $425,000 secured bond.
