Dorothy H. McDaniel, 85, of Dover passed away peacefully at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital on Saturday, March 9, 2013 surrounded by her loving family.
Born on the family farm near Clayton, Delaware on June 21, 1927, she learned at an early age the value of family and hard work. She later instilled those qualities in her children. After graduating as salutatorian from Smyrna High School in 1945, she met and married William P. McDaniel and moved to Dover. For over thirty years, she helped institute environmental protection programs while working for the Water Pollution Commission and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. She was an Administrative Assistant to four DNREC Cabinet Secretaries. She loved life, her family, cooking large holiday dinners and called everyone “sweetie.”
Mrs. McDaniel was preceded in death by her parents, Walter W. and Mary E. Hill, her husband of 55 years, William P. McDaniel and a dear friend, Gertrude “Sherry” Moore. She is survived by and had a loving influence on her children Mary M. Harbeson (John), William P. “Chip” McDaniel II (Ginger), Patricia McDaniel-Foltz; grandchildren Rebecca A. Cronk (Patrick), J. Matthew Harbeson, Holly B. Reynolds (Dallas), W. Brian McDaniel, M. Katelyn Foltz, Caroline L. Foltz and Alexander C. Foltz; great-grandchildren Garrett and Layna Reynolds, Tyler and Miranda Cronk and her nieces and nephews. She will also be sadly missed by her sister Ruth H. Gooding of Wilmington, DE and a special nephew, William W. Hill (Alice) of Smyrna, DE.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Dover. A gathering of family and friends will be held one hour earlier. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Wesley United Methodist Church Scholarship Program, 209 South State Street, Dover, DE 19901 or the Alzheimer’s Association of Delaware 399 Market Street Suite 102 Philadelphia, PA 19106.
