Ginormous hair is back, and with a vengeance, in Dover High School's rendition of the Tony Award-winning musical "Hairspray," which opens Friday. The final show is Saturday.
Directed by Julius Robinson — "Hairspray" spotlights the pleasantly plump teen Tracy Turnblad and her big bouffant during the early 1960s in Baltimore, Md. The girl is a dancing machine who dreams of gracing the popular teen dance program, the "Corny Collins Show," hosted by the hunk Link Larkin.
However, Turnblad's plus-sized mom, Edna, worries her bubbly daughter will get mocked for being big boned if she appears on the show.
Still intent on dancing her heart out on the program, "Hairspray" uses sugary tunes and stylish footwork to remind people how silly racism and prejudice is.
"It's such a good message," said senior Cesar Martinez, 17, cast as Edna. "I love how they put this really deep message into this fun musical. It's not a drama; it's this fun comedy that has such a good message in it."
A key part of what makes Dover High's production entertaining is that Martinez makes a pretty convincing mom.
"It's actually a lot of fun," Martinez said. "I think it's something that every actor or actress should do at some point in their life, playing a different gender, because you can get so much into a character if you use costumes, especially if you're playing a different gender. We have the bras, the dresses and wigs — and it's a lot of fun."
"Hairspray" features music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by both Scott Wittman and Shaiman, and book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, which is based on the 1988 namesake film by John Waters.
