  • The run has ended for the last remaining Henlopen Conference team left in the DIAA State Basketball Tournament after Howard downed the Polytech Panthers 68-53 on Tuesday night.
The Panthers had a promising start on Tuesday night against the #2 seeded Howard Wildcats taking a 16-15 lead into the second quarter.
However, the second quarter would not be as fruitful for the Panthers as their defense fell apart and their offense went ice-cold.
The Wildcats feasted on turnovers and spread the ball around nicely opening up some high-percentage shots from beyond the arc to score 26 points in the second quarter. On the offensive side of the ball, the Panthers managed just 5 points, going scoreless for a large portion of the quarter.
Polytech rebounded in the third quarter, cutting the Howard lead to 12 points entering the fourth and final quarter.
The Panthers did their best to climb back into the game in the fourth, but the Howard offense had just enough to keep them at arms-length.
Devaughn Mallory led the Panthers with 15points, followed by Antonio DePina who finished with 14.
It’s another quarterfinal exit for the Panthers who seem to be in this spot virtually every season. Polytech will lose some key parts to their team to graduation, including DePina and Harry Johnson.
However, with the likes of Mallory, Juwan Gray and John Williams returning the Panthers still look to be a contender once again next season.
