The Appo Jaguars girls basketball squad moved on in the DIAA State Basketball Tournament on Friday night, defeating Caesar Rodney 48-31.

Caesar Rodney defeated A.I. duPont on Wednesday to advance to the second round and early on Friday night it looked as if the Riders were primed for an upset.

Perhaps it was a little rust, or playoff jitters, but the Appo Lady Jags came out flat.

Caesar Rodney’s press defense gave Appo fits early on and led to a 7-5 Riders lead going into the second quarter.

While the Appo offense would awaken, the Lady Riders continued to play their game controlling the pace with a staggered 1-3-1 defense. Two late baskets by Appo trimmed the CR lead to 17-16 at the break.

In the second half, all the rust Appo had suffered through in the first half was gone and their offense began to take over.

After scoring only 16 first half points, Appo responded with 17 in the third quarter and another 15 in the fourth stanza. The Riders offense simply wasn’t able to keep up, tallying only 7 points in each quarter.

Paris Christie scored a game-high 17 points in the win for Appo, while Amber Cale scored 12 and Taylor Bond tallied 10 points for the Lady Jags.

CR’s Chakia Young led the Riders with 13 points in the loss.

Appo now moves on to face #4 Ursuline on Wednesday night.
