Over the weekend, the 2013 DIAA Basketball Championship Tournament brackets were announced leading up to the start of both the girls and boys tournament this week.
The Polytech Panthers (17-3) boys basketball squad was named the highest seed of the local area schools, earning the 7th seed and a first-round bye. The Panthers will await the winner of the #10 St. Elizabeth’s (13-7) vs. #23 Dickinson (11-9) whom they’ll face at home on Saturday night – tipoff 5:00 p.m.
The Dover Senators were the only other boys team to make the tournament, earning the #16 seed after posting an 11-9 record this season. The Senators will take on #17 Concord (9-11) at home on Thursday night – tipoff 7:00 p.m.
Sanford, Friends, Salesianum, St. Andrew’s, Howard, Hodgson and A.I. duPont earned first round byes along with Polytech on the boys side. The boys tournament kicks off with first round games on Thursday night, followed by second round games on Saturday.
The Caesar Rodney Lady Riders were the only girls team locally to make the State Tournament. Posting an 11-9 record this season, the Lady Riders earned the #12 seed. They’ll host the #21 seeded A.I. duPont Tigers (14-6) on Wednesday – tipoff at 7:00 p.m.
St. Elizabeth, Smyrna, Ursuline, Appoquinimink, Sanford, Seaford, Caravel and St. Mark’s earned first round byes on the girls side. The rest of the girls will also tip it off starting with the first round on Wednesday, followed by the second round on Friday this week.
