Over the weekend, the 2013 DIAA Basketball Championship Tournament brackets were announced leading up to the start of both the girls and boys tournament this week.
On the boys side, Sussex Tech (14-6), Cape Henlopen (12-8) and Sussex Central (12-8) are all tournament bound.
Cape Henlopen, fresh off a Henlopen Conference title, earned the #13 seed and will host #20 Laurel (14-6) on Thursday night.
After missing the state tournament last season, the Sussex Tech Ravens responded this season with a 14-6 record good enough to earn them the #14 seed. The Ravens will draw #19 Glasgow (12-8) in the first round.
The Golden Knights from Sussex Central have made the tournament for the first time since 2009. Sussex Central posted an impressive 12-8 record and will travel north to take on #12 Newark (15-5) on Thursday.
Sanford, Friends, Salesianum, St. Andrew’s, Howard, Hodgson and A.I. duPont earned first round byes along with Polytech on the boys side. The boys tournament kicks off with first round games on Thursday night, followed by second round games on Saturday.
The Lady Golden Knights, Lady Ravens and the Lady’s from Indian River have all qualified for the tournament, as well.
Sussex Central, lost only 4 games this season posting a 16-4 record which was good enough to earn them the #11 seed overall. The Golden Knights will host #22 Tower Hill (9-11) in the first round on Wednesday.
Indian River earned the #19 seed after posting an 11-8 record this season. They’ll travel north to take on #14 William Penn (13-7) on Wednesday.
The Lady Ravens just snuck into the tournament, posting a 9-11 record to earn the last spot in the tournament. Sussex Tech will draw a very tough Padua team that despite playing a very tough schedule finished 9-11 as well earning the #9 seed.
St. Elizabeth, Smyrna, Ursuline, Appoquinimink, Sanford, Seaford, Caravel and St. Mark’s earned first round byes on the girls side. The rest of the girls will also tip it off starting with the first round on Wednesday, followed by the second round on Friday this week.
