A 38-year-old Dover man was killed in a hit and run accident on U.S. Route 13 near its junction with South Governors Avenue Tuesday evening, Delaware State Police said.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:07 p.m. Tuesday as an unknown vehicle was traveling southbound on South DuPont Highway just south of South Governors Avenue, State Police Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said. Curt C. Burns was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of U.S. Route 13 from west to east when he was struck by the vehicle and thrown onto the southbound shoulder.

The vehicle fled the scene without stopping, Fournier said. Burns was transported by EMS to Kent General Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, he said.

The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Southbound U.S. 13 was closed for approximately two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
