Camden resident Alta Porterfield complained to Camden Town Council about the quality of the landscape buffer constructed between the new Redner's Warehouse Market nearing the end of construction on U.S. Route 13 and her home on Main Street.
Namely, Porterfield said she was disappointed in some of the small sizes of the trees planted and the amount of space between them during the public comment portion of council's meeting Monday night.
She also wondered if Redner's was going to construct a wooden wall to help block the view of car headlights from her home. "I'm surprised at how it turned out," Porterfield said.
Councilman John Green said that he and Vice Mayor Justin King were members of the Planning Commission when the Redner's application came up and they addressed landscape requirements. But both resigned from the commission to run for Town Council and never saw the final plans.
Town Solicitor Craig Eliassen said the town would have to review the plans.
Redner's spokesman Eric White said the landscaping and maintenance of the property fell within the purview of the property owner, the ONIX Group.
The property had been owned by CR Plaza LLC, and BBC Properties owner Mike Zimmerman had been the managing partner. Ownership had since been transferred to a company owned by the principals of the ONIX Group. Zimmerman said the development complied with all terms of the town of Camden's requirements. An ONIX official, who requested not to be named, confirmed that assessment.
"We constructed the landscaping in accordance with the approved plans," he said. "We played by the rules."
King said Redner's was a reputable company that had expanded its presence in Kent County and Delaware. As such, he felt confident that a resolution would be reached. Mayor W.G. Edmanson concurred.
Indeed, the ONIX official said he had spoken to town officials about the Redner's landscaping and would reach out to Porterfield next.
"We want to be a good neighbor and reach out to her and understand her concerns. We're trying to gather information so that we can address her concerns."
