A 30-year-old woman who attended a party at a Dover hotel Saturday night was raped early Sunday morning at that hotel by an acquaintance who had attended the same party, police said.
The victim and several friends rented a room at the Dover hotel on the 5000 block of South DuPont Highway Saturday for a small party, Dover Police Lt. Alan Rachko said. One female witness invited several friends to the room, which included the suspect, he said.
Sometime during the early hours on Sunday the victim went into her room and fell asleep as several guests remained in the other room, Rachko said. At approximately 6 a.m. Sunday, the victim awoke to find the suspect, John Courtney, having sexual intercourse with her without her consent.
The victim kicked the defendant off her as she realized what was happening and ran into the bathroom with her clothes that he removed, Rachko said. The victim then began screaming and the defendant fled on foot.
Dover Police officers located the defendant a short distance from the hotel and arrested him. Courtney, 26, of Dover, was charged with second-degree rape and committed to James Vaughn Correctional Center in lieu of $25,000 secured bond.
