According to Caesar Rodney School District Superintendent Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald, Dover Air Force Base recently released an assessment of an initial plan for construction of a new Welsh Air Base Middle School.
According to the school board the base plans to leave the existing school standing while the new school is under construction in the vicinity of the athletic fields.
Due to the fact that the base is taking it upon itself to construct the new school, the Caesar Rodney School District Board of Education will not have to hold a referendum prior to construction. If everything goes according to plan in the process of Caesar Rodney reapplying for the base contract, the base school will remain a part of the Caesar Rodney School District.
"We will continue to support them and help them through their construction process in any way that we can," said Fitzgerald.
Officials from the Air Force Base will make further comments on the new school on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
