The Caesar Rodney Riders wrestling team defeated the Polytech Panthers, 56-12 on Friday night. The win for the Riders puts them at 3-0 within the state and 4-2 overall.
The Riders were victorious in all but 3 of the 14 bouts on Friday night. Seniors Blake Gibbs (285), Johnny Joanem (160) and Max Wilt (152) won in their weight classes. While underclassmen John DeVary (106), Micah Hight (126), Anthony Scarfo (132), Brandon Scott (120), Danny Ortiz (138), Zackery Parker (220), Craig Logan (195) and Connor Castellon (170) took home wins.
For Polytech, it’s their first loss of the season after starting off 3-0. Kody Stevens (113), Trevor White (145), and Mark Mullnack (182) were victorious in their matches. The Panthers have three conference matches in a row – against Delmar, Laurel and Indian River – before a quad-meet against Caravel Academy and Delaware Military Academy this weekend.
After starting the season with two straight victories, the Riders stumbled a bit against some tough competition in the Easton Area tournament in Pennsylvania last weekend. The Riders responded well, first with a 62-12 win over Milford last Wednesday. Then, following up that victory with another strong performance on Friday night has put CR in good position as they approach perhaps the toughest part of their schedule.
On Friday night, the Riders will take on the Sussex Central Golden Knights (2-0) before participating in the Escape the Rock Tournament at Smyrna High School over the weekend. And it doesn’t get an easier after that for CR with Sussex Tech (2-1), Salesianum (1-1) and Smyrna (3-1) on the horizon.
The Riders proved on Friday night that they are among the elite. Handily defeating the 2nd ranked team in D-II is no small feat and can be seen as a message of sorts to the rest of the state. Now, with their toughest test ahead the Riders seem primed to continue their winning ways.
