  • The Delaware State Police investigated a serious crash involving a truck and horse drawn buggy manned by a 15-year-old Amish boy on Westville Road west of Wyoming on Monday afternoon.
    Marian L. Iplenski, 78, of Hartly, was driving a 2001 Dodge Dakota eastbound on Westville Road just west of Hazlettville Road when she failed to see an Amish buggy in front of her, State Police Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said. Iplenski struck the left, rear portion with the right front bumper of her Dakota, causing the carriage to overturn on the shoulder and become disabled.
    Iplenski drove to a nearby house where she alerted the resident to call 911, Fournier said.
    A 13-year-old male passenger in the buggy was removed from the scene by State Police Helicopter and transported to A.I. DuPont Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition., Fournier said The 15 year old driver was not injured in the crash, he said.
    Iplenski, who was properly restrained, was transported from the residence by EMS to Bayhealth- Kent General Hospital where she was treated for unrelated health issues, Fourier said. She was cited for inattentive driving.
    The roadway in the area of the incident was closed for approximately one hour as the crash was investigated and cleared, he said. The horse was not severely injured in the crash and was removed from the scene by members of the Amish community.
