Jamie F. Grigsby, of Dover, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, Dec.31,2012. She was 78.
Jamie was born, July 11, 1934, in Charleston, South Carolina, to the Late- James & Helen (Gallashaw) Freeman. She was baptized and later married in the Israel Reformed Episcopal Church, of Charleston,S.C.; where she also began her career in teaching.
After relocating to Delaware, she continued her teaching in the Capitol School District, for over 25 years; mostly at the Hartly Elementary School.
She was a lifetime member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; and a founding member of the athletic booster club at Delaware State University.
Through her husbands career in the military, she had served as past president of the N.C.O. Wives club at Dover Air Force Base. Jamie was very active in the Democratic Party and had spent many years working at the polls. She also did volunteer work at Kent General Hospital, in the Physical Therapy Dept. She also enjoyed bowling, and was an avid card player and master gardener.
Jamie was preceded in death by her husband- George H. Grigsby, II, who passed in 2009.
She is survived by a daughter- Dana Buckner & her husband- Dennis, with whom she resided; 2 Sisters- Virginia Joyce Howard, of Charleston,S.C. & Dr. Margaret F. Smith, of Charlotte, N.C. ; a special brother & Sister- Rod & Regina Byers; granddaughter- DaJae L. Buckner; her adopted daughters- Marlene Simmons, of Wilmington, Lisa Irving & Stephanie Toslon Scott, both of Dover; and her best friend Sallie Myrick, of Dover.; 2 nephews- Alphonso J. Smith & his wife-Charlotte, of North Carolina & Mark P. Lucas,& wife-Toi, of Maryland; Niece- Michi Howard, of North Carolina; as well as a host of cousins & friends.
Family and friends may view Monday, January 7, 2013 from 6 to 8 pm, in the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 West Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 10am, in the funeral home. Burial will take place at 2 pm in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
