Get ready for some exciting girls high school basketball during the holiday break as twelve schools are preparing for the 2012 Pat Borowski Girls Basketball Tournament held annually at Lake Forest High School in Felton.
If you didn't know, Mrs. Borowski is a graduate of John Dickinson High School and played on the first University of Delaware women's basketball team before she began her illustrious career as girls' basketball coach at Lake Forest High School. Borowski as also the Field Hockey coach during her tenure at the Felton school. She remains among the state of Delaware's all-time leaders with 310 victories, and was selected Henlopen Conference Coach of the Year three times. She retired several years ago after coaching and teaching at the school for 34 year. The tournament stands in proud recognition of her wonderful legacy on the field and in the classroom.
This year's tournament has expanded to twelve teams, including Concord, Dover, Hodgson Vo Tech, Laurel, Middletown, Milford, Polytech, Red Lion, Sussex Central, Tower Hill, Woodbridge and Lake Forest.
The Spartans enter the tournament with a 1-4 after an opening night victory over Pencader Charter. Under coach Stephanie Scott, the team has high hopes to turn the season around.
Milford coach Leona White had high praise for Borowski. "I played under Pat, so it's certainly an honor to play in this tournament that's named after her." White brings a young but experienced team to the tournament and added she and her girls are very excited to play in the tournament and they are hoping to "Bring home the Gold" this season. The Lady Bucs are 2-2 going into the Holiday break.
This year's tournament begins on Thursday, Dec. 27th with the opening game featuring Lake Forest against Red Lion. Opening tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The rest of the tournament games will take place on Friday, December 28.
Last year's tournament was won by Tower Hill in a thriller over Milford 39-32.
