A Dover man was seriously injured Thursday when the farm tractor he was driving on the shoulder of Bay Road was rear-ended by utility truck near Magnolia.
Clinton M. Wilson, 27, was airlifted to Christiana Medical Center where is being treated for serious injuries, police said.
The crash occurred on southbound Bay Road, just south of Trap Shooters Road about 2:15 p.m., according to state police.
Wilson was driving a 2007 John Deere tractor that was pulling a wagon full of crushed corn when a 2006 Ford F55 utility truck traveling in the right lane swerved into the shoulder, striking the rear of the wagon.
The impact caused the tractor and wagon to overturn, ejecting Wilson onto the shoulder and spilling the corn onto the southbound lanes of the highway, police said.
The tractor and wagon came to rest on the grass off the west side of the road, while the Ford spun counterclockwise in the roadway before overturning and coming to rest partially in the center median and partially in the left lane of the northbound lanes.
The driver of the utility truck, 37-year-old Harrington resident Paul T. Carter, was slightly injured in the collision but refused treatment at the scene, police said. He later was cited for careless driving.
Traffic on both north- and southbound Bay Road was impacted for nearly four hours while crews cleaned up the spilled corn and police investigated the crash.
