Mary Ella Cluley Crowell, born Dec. 29, 1916, died Dec. 7, 2012.
Born in Philadelphia, PA to Olia and Herbert Cluley Sr. Mary had a brother, Herbert Jr. The family also resided in Washington DC and Vineland, NJ before moving to Dover, DE when Mary was in 6th grade. Mary graduated from Dover High School in 1936. She married Milton Gruwell in 1936 and had one daughter, Linda. They divorced in 1957. Mary remarried USAF T/SGT Clyde Crowell in 1958. Mary was a homemaker most of her life. She did work for DuPonts in Seaford, DE during WWII.
Mary was a clerk typist for the State of DE Corporation Department for 2 years. She did co-own the Tic Toc Restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, DE with her mother from 1963-1970. She and Clyde owned Park Upholstery in Camden, DE from 1963 until moving to Clearwater, FL in 1973. Mary was a lifelong member of the Order of The Eastern Star. Mary moved from Clearwater to Oldsmar, FL in 2002. She resided in skilled care at Stratford CT in Palm Harbor where she enjoyed the last nearly 6 years of her life. She enjoyed singing along with the staff there and their many wonderful activities. Mary passed peacefully at Mease Countryside Hospital of natural causes with her granddaughter at her side.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and her loving husband of 43 years, Clyde. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Gruwell Holderbaum of Dover, DE.
She had a favorite niece, Barbara Leone of Camden, DE. She also is survived by her adored grandchildren, Michelle and husband Bobby Baldwin, Scott Holderbaum, Holly Holderbaum of Oldsmar, FL and Kristen Holderbaum of Dover, DE. Mary also had four greatgrandchildren Jordan Baldwin, Dalton Baldwin, Toni Holderbaum of Oldsmar, FL and Jackson Holderbaum of Dover, DE.
Services are Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 1 PM at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens, 1750 Curlew RD, Palm Harbor, FL 34683. The family suggests contributions to Suncoast Hospice, 5771 Roosevelt BLVD, Clearwater, FL 33760.
