  • Dover will usher in the holidays tonight with its "Capital Holiday Celebration" in downtown Dover. The night features a lot of traditional Christmas festivities, from caroling and hot chocolate to a grand Christmas tree lighting.
Here's what to know before you go.
    EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
    1. Keep warm and cozy
Once again, starting at 5 p.m., the Kiwanis Club of Dover will be providing free hot chocolate to keep holiday revelers toasty warm. And, what goes best with hot chocolate? The cookies provided by Heritage at Dover Assisted Living Community, of course.
But, if the temperatures outside seem a bit too daunting for your little ones, just head inside the Dover Public Library and rest a spell while the kids participate in the children's craft area.
    2 Twinkling lights
Nothing says Christmas quite like a good-lookin' Christmas tree, right? Mayor Carleton Carey will flip the switch that lights up the fur tree in front of City Hall and all the trees along Loockerman St, from State ST. to the post office.
    3 Merry melodies
Following the lighting of the trees, several Dover area schools and Dover Dignitaries will usher in the season with a bit of song. Expect to hear some great oldies, from "Jingle Bells" to "Deck the Halls." Don't worry about the lyrics, though. You'll remember every line as soon as you hear these childhood classics.
4 The man of the hour
No Christmas celebration would be complete without a visit from the big man in red, right? Well, in Dover, Santa makes quite an entrance, trading in his sleigh for a bright red fire engine. Once he arrives, be sure to join him at Santa House inside "Winter Wonderland," located at Loockerman Way Plaza.
    5 A few more songs
Rev. Norman Hutchins and the Frontline Ministries Choir will sing the night to a close. Rev. Hutchins is a Dove Award winner, whose gospel singing and interpretations have been nominated for numerous awards. Expect to hear some more heart-warming, Christmas classics that will take you back to Christmas Eve church services.
