H&H Liquors next door to Yoon's Martial Arts off U.S. Route 13 is bigger and better than the previous liquor that stood in its place.

The Yoon family has renovated and re-opened the former liquor store on the 1100 block of South Dupont Highway into H&H Liquors that is 75 percent bigger than the old premises.

They did this by using the space that had been vacated by the salon that had been next door to the old liquor store, H&H proprietor Alex Yoon said. It took about four months to tear down, clean up and build anew, he said. It was a family affair that included himself, his father, Seok Yoon, and his mother, In Ja Yoon.

The grand opening was held in early September, Alex Yoon said.

"The people that used to come here are like, 'Oh my goodness,'" he said. "There's a shock on their faces because it's changed so much. We have the [new] cooler and the wine selection. It's just so much different."

Yoon, a Caesar Rodney High School graduate, is also an instructor of the Korean martial art tae kwon do at the hard-to-miss Yoon's Martial Arts studio, also owned by his father.

Managing a liquor store is not what Yoon, 23, envisioned for himself after graduating in 2011 from the University of Delaware, where he majored in chemistry and minored in economics.

"If I knew I was going to be doing this, I would have chosen a different major," Yoon said.

But, it is a job in a tough economy and he is helping his father run one of his properties, Yoon said. When the last tenant couldn't keep up with the liquor store, his father decided to invest in it and try to build a better liquor store for the neighborhood. Then, he turned to Alex for help.

"He's a good boy — very respectable," said Seok Yoon, 57. "

Alex still ponders a future in which he follows his original plan to go to graduate school or medical school after spending a year helping his father get the liquor store established. Or maybe he'll obtain his master's in business administration and stay for longer.

"You never know," he said.

For now, the immediate goal is to offer H&H customers fairly competitive prices in a pleasant setting, Yoon said.

"I know we can't compete with the huge liquor stores like Mr. B's and Liquor Depot, but we want to make it a bit competitive," he said. "Our focus is convenience, friendliness and cleanliness.

"We want customers to be happy when they walk in," he said. "We want them to be happy when they walk out. They can come in, get what they want. We have a decent selection of wines and beers."
