  • Dover Police arrest man for drug possession while searching for wanted suspect

  • Dover Police officers were searching for a suspect wanted on numerous weapons charges and bench warrants and ended up arresting another man for drug possession Monday.
    The officers from Dover Police's Operation Safe Streets and patrol officers were searching for a William Loper, 21, when they were led to a house in the unit block of South New Street at 2 p.m. Monday, Lt. Daniel McKeown said. A search of the residence for Loper turned up empty, he said. However, the officers observed drugs on the premises.
    A search warrant was obtained for the residence and police seized 52 grams of crack cocaine, 0.6 grams of heroin and $3,850, McKeown said. The investigation revealed that the drugs belonged to Dwayne Matthews.
    Matthews was then arrested after a struggle, McKeown said. He was subsequently charged with possession of Tier 5 quantity of crack cocaine, possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.
    He was arraigned at Delaware Justice of the Peace Court 7 and then committed to James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in lieu of $22,200 secured bond.
    Dover Police are still looking for Loper on numerous weapons charges and bench warrants. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact the Dover Police Department at (302) 736-7111. Callers may remain anonymous.
